How to cut grocery spending without eating worse: 7 habits
Grocery spending falls most easily through planning, not deprivation. Make a weekly menu, shop with a list and after a meal, compare the price per kilo, cook portions for the next day and throw away less. Log the weekly total so you can see whether it works.

Why is food the category with the most potential?
Food is the flexible expense you make most often. You cannot renegotiate rent every week, but in the shop you decide dozens of times a month.
That is exactly where impulse buys, unused offers and wasted food come from. You do not have to eat less; you have to buy more deliberately.
Habits 1–3. How do you plan before leaving the house?
- Make a simple menu for 5–7 days. You do not need complicated recipes; a few basic meals on repeat are enough.
- Check the fridge and cupboards before writing the list so you do not buy again what you already have.
- Write the list and stick to it. Add a small “something else” line so shopping does not feel like a ban.
Habits 4–5. What do you do in the shop?
- Go after you have eaten. Shopping on an empty stomach usually leads to unplanned products.
- Compare the price per kilo or litre, not the shelf price. Big and small packs can mislead.
Check the shop’s own brands and use the market for seasonal fruit and vegetables. Buy large quantities only of what you really eat, not whatever is on offer.
Habits 6–7. What do you do at home?
- Cook extra portions and freeze them or keep them for the next day. A single weekend of cooking can cover several meals.
- Use what you bought earlier first. Put new items behind the old ones and turn leftovers into soups, omelettes or fillings.
What does a portion really cost?
The price per portion shows differences you do not see at the till. The example below is illustrative.
| Option | Total cost | Cost per portion |
|---|---|---|
| Cooked at home from ingredients | 90 lei | about 22.5 lei |
| Bought ready-made in a shop | 160 lei | 40 lei |
| Ordered with delivery | 280 lei | 70 lei |
This does not mean you never order in. It means that when you do, you know what it costs.
How do you set a realistic grocery budget?
For 4 weeks, log everything you buy for food, including coffees and meals at work. Divide the total by 4 and you have your real weekly average.
Then set a weekly limit slightly below the average and track it. If a week goes over, make up for it in the next. If something does not fit, adjust the limit; do not quit.
In Family Calculator you can set a limit on the “Groceries” category and see how much is left at any point in the month.
Frequently asked questions
Are shops’ own brands worse?
Not necessarily. Compare the ingredient list and the price per kilo. For many basic products the quality gap is small and the price gap can be large.
Are bulk offers worth it?
Only if the product gets eaten before it expires and you have somewhere to store it. Otherwise the saving on the shelf is lost in wasted food.
How do I keep track of grocery spending?
Log each purchase the same day in the same category. Photograph the receipt and let an app pull out the total, if you use one.
