The 24-hour rule: how to stop impulse buying

Editorial team Family CalculatorPublished: 5 min read

Short answer

A simple rule stops impulse buying: if an item costs more than an amount you set, wait 24 hours before buying it. You can add the cost in hours of work and a wish list. If you still want it a day later, buy it without guilt.

Why do we buy on impulse?

Shops, apps and ads are built so that the decision comes fast: limited stock, an offer about to expire, one-click payment. Emotions such as boredom, stress and excitement do the rest.

The problem is not weak willpower but that the decision is made at the worst moment. The fix is to move the decision to later.

How does the 24-hour rule work?

Choose a threshold amount, for example 200 lei. For any purchase above it, do not buy on the spot: put the item on a list and come back the next day.

If after 24 hours you still want it and it fits the budget, buy it. If you changed your mind, you saved the money without effort. For large amounts, extend the pause to a week.

Seeing the price differently: cost in hours of work

Divide your monthly net income by the hours you work. For 20,000 lei and 160 hours you get 125 lei an hour. An item costing 1,500 lei is 12 hours of work.

The question “is it worth 12 hours of my life?” often changes the answer. The figures are illustrative; use your own.

What do you do about the temptations around you?

  • Unsubscribe from promotional emails and turn off shop notifications.
  • Delete the saved card from apps; a few extra seconds at checkout are a good filter.
  • Do not browse online shops as a way to relax.
  • Go shopping with a list and a fixed amount.
  • Do not shop when you are tired, hungry or upset.

How do you use a wish list?

Write down everything you want to buy, with the date and price. Most items drop off the list within days and you do not miss them. The ones still there after a month are good purchases.

You can set a monthly “no questions asked” amount for small pleasures. A clear limit makes it easier to follow the rule for everything else.

How do you see how much you saved?

Log the purchases you avoided in Family Calculator, in a category of their own or in notes, and see at month end how much you saved. A concrete number motivates more than an intention.

Check the “Other expenses” category as well: that is usually where impulse purchases hide.

Frequently asked questions

Which threshold should I choose?

One at which a mistaken purchase would bother you. For some families it is 100 lei, for others 500.

What if the offer expires in the meantime?

Similar discounts usually come back. An “only today” offer is itself a sign to slow down.

Does the rule apply to necessary purchases?

No. For things you need, like food or medicine, do not wait. The rule is for wants, not needs.
