Back to school without the financial shock: the list, the budget and the calendar

Editorial team Family CalculatorPublished: 6 min read

Short answer

The cost of a new school year feels lighter when you split it up. Make a three-column list (needed now, can wait, reuse), set a cap per child and buy in stages from July to October. Do not forget the costs that come back monthly: meals, transport, clubs.

What actually counts as school expenses?

Stationery is only the visible part. A school year has two kinds of costs: those paid once at the start and those that return every month.

  • Once: clothes and shoes, a school bag, supplies, books or materials, class contributions.
  • Monthly: school meals or after-school care, transport, clubs and sports, extra lessons.

How do you make a three-column list?

Before you buy anything, write down everything you think is needed and sort it into three columns:

  1. Needed now: what is missing and what your child cannot go to school without.
  2. Can wait: what is only needed in a few weeks or depends on teachers’ requests.
  3. Reuse: last year’s bag, clothes from an older sibling, leftover supplies.

Check what you already own first. Often the third column hides half of the list.

What might it cost? An example for one child

The figures are illustrative; yours will depend on your child’s age and school.

Example: a school year for one child
CategoryTypeAmount
Clothes and shoesonce1,500 lei
School bag and suppliesonce700 lei
Books and materialsonce500 lei
Class contributionsonce300 lei
Mealsmonthly500 lei
Transportmonthly200 lei
Club or sportmonthly300 lei

One-off costs are 3,000 lei and monthly costs are 1,000 lei. Over 9 school months that is 9,000 lei, so about 12,000 lei a year for one child. Notice that the monthly part weighs more than the August shopping.

What does a four-step shopping calendar look like?

  1. July: take stock at home, make the three-column list and set the cap per child.
  2. August: buy what does not change (the bag, basic supplies), ideally on sale.
  3. September: once you know the teachers’ requests, complete the list; do not buy everything in the first week.
  4. October: compare actual spending with the plan and adjust the following months.

How do you save without giving up what matters?

  • Swap clothes and books with families you know.
  • Spend more on what wears out fast, such as shoes and the school bag, and less on what changes every year.
  • Buy clothes in stages, by season and by how fast your child grows.
  • From spring, set aside a small amount each month so you do not pay for everything out of the August salary.

In Family Calculator you can create a category budget for school and see at any time how much of it is left.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start preparing?

1–2 months ahead, in July. That gives you time to take stock and buy in stages instead of all in one week.

How do I involve my child in the budget?

Let them choose within a cap: for example, a set amount for a bag or notebooks, in which they decide. They learn to compare and choose.

What if I cannot pay for everything at once?

Prioritise the “needed now” column and postpone the rest or look for second-hand options. Ask the school whether support funds exist.
