Forgotten subscriptions: how to find them in 30 minutes and what to keep
Small subscriptions go unnoticed because they are paid automatically. Open the last 3 months of your bank statement, list every recurring payment, multiply the monthly amount by 12 and ask of each one: did I use it this month? Cancel or pause what you do not use, and put what you keep on a list with its renewal date.

Why do subscriptions get out of hand?
A subscription of 60 lei a month does not hurt. That is exactly why it stays on your card for years. The payment happens by itself, with no moment where you decide again, “do I still want this?”.
Add free trials that turned paid, family plans nobody uses and apps installed in a burst of enthusiasm. Each one is small, but together they can reach several thousand lei a year.
Where do you look for them? Five places to check
- Your bank statement for the last 3 months: look for the same amount returning monthly on the same date.
- Your inbox: search for “receipt”, “renewal”, “subscription”, “invoice”.
- The app store on your phone, in the active subscriptions section.
- Services where your card is saved: video, music, games, cloud storage.
- Your phone and internet bill: add-ons picked up along the way, extra options, TV channels.
What do they cost per year? An example
The monthly price is misleading. Multiply by 12 and you see the real figure.
| Subscription | Per month | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| Video platform | 100 lei | 1,200 lei |
| Music | 60 lei | 720 lei |
| Fitness app, unused | 90 lei | 1,080 lei |
| Cloud storage | 40 lei | 480 lei |
| TV package | 120 lei | 1,440 lei |
| Total | 410 lei | 4,920 lei |
In this example, cancelling the unused app saves 1,080 lei a year without changing anything in daily life.
Keep, pause or cancel? Three questions
Ask the same questions of each subscription, in order:
- Did I use it in the last 30 days? If not, you can almost certainly let it go.
- If it cost double tomorrow, would I still pay? If not, its real value is lower than its price.
- Can it be paused, or bought for a single month when I need it? If so, cancel now and come back later.
Subscriptions you use often and that replace something else (such as one service the whole family shares) are worth keeping without guilt.
How do you stop them piling up again?
- Set a calendar reminder 3 days before each important renewal.
- For a free trial, cancel the same day; you can usually keep using the service until it expires.
- Keep subscriptions on a single card so you can see them in one place.
- Share family plans instead of paying for several separate accounts.
- Repeat the check every 6 months, on the same day as your monthly budget review.
In Family Calculator you can log subscriptions as recurring payments, and the app shows the total per month and per year together.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get my money back after an unintended renewal?
It depends on the provider’s terms. Some accept refunds within a short window, others do not. Write to support as soon as possible and explain what happened.
Are family plans worth it?
Often yes, if at least two people use them and they cost less than separate accounts. Check the provider’s terms for the number of users.
How often should I check my subscriptions?
A full check every 6 months, plus a quick look at your statement each month. That way you catch any new payment quickly.
